The Legacy
The Custodians of the Original
The formal, unified legal custodian of the traditional cultivation communities of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
I. The King of Sativa
The iNkosi yeSativa Agricultural Co-operative represents the lineage, the soil, and the ancestral expertise that cultivated the world's most recognised legacy Sativa: Durban Poison. We are the ancestral authority on Durban Poison.
Our framework exists to bridge the gap between traditional agricultural mastery and the global market — ensuring that the heritage of KwaZulu-Natal remains protected, authentic, and economically sovereign.
This is not a corporate venture. It is a collective. Every grower is a shareholder. Every shareholder owns the brand.
II. The Global Protection Directive
The Co-operative operates under strict intellectual property protocols to maintain transparency on the global stage.
Major international registries — including the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, and the European Union Intellectual Property Office — have consistently declined private corporate attempts to monopolise the Durban Poison® name. This protects consumers from being misled by synthetic or corporate imitations bearing a name that belongs to a place, a people, and a tradition.
In accordance with international trade treaties and agricultural standards, the Co-operative has formally initiated the establishment of a Geographical Indication registry for Durban Poison®. This GI framework ensures that no products may legally bear the name Durban Poison globally unless it carries the official Certification Seal issued by iNkosi yeSativa Co-operative.
Formal notifications of this indigenous heritage framework are being systematically logged with international intellectual property bodies, establishing our priority on the global record.
III. Community Sovereignty
Traditional growers remain completely independent over their lands and ancestral farming methods. The Co-operative does not interfere with your craft. What it does is take your product — the same product you have always grown — and add the value that turns it from raw cannabis into a global brand.
The ownership of the brand, the domains, and the intellectual property remains locked within the KZN collective. It cannot be bought out, hijacked, or transferred to outside political or corporate interests.
To compete against global conglomerates, the Co-operative reserves a strategic allocation to recruit world-class executive leadership and specialised management. These professionals are hired to maximise financial returns directly back to the community shareholders. They do not own the culture. They serve it.
The overwhelming majority of equity is structurally reserved for the traditional rural cultivators of KwaZulu-Natal — ensuring the community always retains democratic control and the lion's share of global revenues.
Note: All share allocations and operational frameworks are preliminary concepts subject to formal refinement by the founding committee during the official registration process.
